One of the biggest e-commerce players in India and certainly one of the leading global players, Flipkart, is concerned about the environment in India and around the world. We know that there is a lot of concern regarding e-commerce websites when it comes to the environment. You must be aware that the delivery done by these websites is burning a lot of fuel which is harmful for the environment. Also, the delivery parcels carry a lot of plastic as well as cardboard and Amazon has been targeted time and again for over-usage of its packaging.
We have seen that Amazon, in order to optimize its packaging, uses a lot of big boxes for small products as well. Now, India’s Flipkart says that it will recollect all the plastic packaging that it hands out to the customers after their items are delivered. This is part of a pilot project by the company which is currently operational in the Indian cities of Mumbai, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, and Ahmedabad as reported by YourStory.
Now, this move is something that is very basic but it does a lot when you think about it. For example, we have seen that there is no use of the plastic which comes with the packaging and we throw it away or keep somewhere in our house and forget. However, Flipkart can reuse it for other packages and the environment can be saved with this move.
The company’s press release reveals that “Flipkart will send out an intimation to consumers asking them to voluntarily hand over plastic packaging to Flipkart Wishmasters (the delivery personnel) for its proper disposal, at the time of product deliveries”. Basically, it means that if the product that you have ordered is not a gift and you can remove the plastic on top of the product ordered then you can hand it over directly to the delivery guy and reduce the plastic waste which will then be reused for other products.
