Rivian wants to remove exclusivity clause with Amazon for EV delivery trucks

You must have heard about the news that Rivian was going to deliver 100,000 EV delivery trucks to Amazon for their delivery fleet and this was regarded as one of the best partnerships due to its environmental friendliness as well as Amazon supporting a startup, at that time, which was Rivian. Now, a few years have already passed since then and Rivian has already started delivering its EV trucks to Amazon and we know that one of the sides is definitely happy with the deal. However, the other side which is Rivian seems to be unhappy with this deal as per new reports.

It is known that Amazon inked an exclusivity deal with Rivian at that time which means that the company can only delivery trucks to Amazon for delivery and no one else. Now, Rivian wants to deliver its trucks to other delivery partners as well because it wants to revisit the exclusivity clause from its contract. Once the exclusivity clause between Amazon and Rivian is reworked, it will help Rivian gain new customers as well as get cashflow which it highly needs right now.

One Rivian spokesperson said “We continue to work closely together, and are navigating a changing economic climate, similar to many companies,”. Amazon’s spokesperson said, “While nothing has changed with our agreement with Rivian, we’ve always said that we want others to benefit from their technology in the long run because having more electric delivery vehicles on the road is good for our communities and our planet,”. As per the latest report, Amazon’s orders have slowed down with the company only wanting 10,000 trucks to be delivered this year which is at the low-end of what it committed in 2019.

While this is not a small number, Rivian is at a stage right now where it can produce a lot more trucks and this is the reason why it wants to deliver to others and gain sales. We do like Amazon’s statement on this matter where they state that they are still committed but also want to get others on this journey and it will eventually be better for the entire world.
