Amazon moves towards sustainability, removes plastic air pillows from its packaging in North America

Amazon has announced plans to completely phase out plastic air pillows from its delivery packaging across North America by the end of this year. The e-commerce giant disclosed on Thursday that it has already replaced 95 percent of these plastic air pillows with paper filler, a move expected to eliminate nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.

The transition to paper filler marks a substantial shift for Amazon, reflecting its commitment to sustainability. Unlike the conventional plastic packaging, the new paper filler is crafted from 100 percent recycled materials, ensuring that customers can easily recycle it at home. Amazon has assured consumers that the paper filler offers equivalent, if not superior, protection for their deliveries.

This initiative is part of Amazon’s broader global strategy to reduce its reliance on single-use plastics and promote eco-friendly alternatives. In regions such as Europe and India, Amazon has already phased out single-use plastic delivery bags, while in Australia and Japan, the company has implemented custom-made paper packaging solutions. However, the transition to paper-based packaging in the United States has been slower, with notable progress seen last year when Amazon replaced plastic bubble mailers and air pillows with recyclable paper packaging at a warehouse in Ohio.

The decision to eliminate plastic air pillows aligns with Amazon’s sustainability goals and responds to growing consumer and regulatory pressures regarding environmental stewardship. By opting for paper filler, Amazon aims not only to minimize its plastic waste but also to enhance the recyclability and eco-friendliness of its packaging materials.

Amazon’s commitment to sustainability has been underscored by various initiatives beyond packaging, including investments in renewable energy and ambitious goals to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The company’s efforts reflect a broader trend in the retail industry towards adopting greener practices and addressing environmental concerns.

As Amazon progresses towards its goal of phasing out plastic air pillows by the end of 2024 in North America, stakeholders are watching closely to see how these changes resonate with consumers and contribute to broader sustainability efforts. The shift to paper filler represents a pivotal moment in Amazon’s journey towards more sustainable operations and sets a precedent for other large-scale retailers to prioritize environmental responsibility.
