Team eCommerce Next interviewed Angelo Coletta from Zakeke to get more insights on how leveraging 3D and AR technologies lead to a more engaging visual shopping experience. Following is our interview with him:

Tell us why you started Zakeke.

For today’s tech-savvy consumer, the path to purchase online experience has become almost as crucial as the quality of the product itself. While standard product images and videos were once enough, a new way of engaging customers and improving conversion rates through 3D and AR are now set to forever alter eCommerce. Additionally, the robotization of industries has brought a great downsizing of production costs globally. Recognizing this, we founded Zakeke to create a platform that leverages these technologies to help brands build engaging and visual shopping experiences. Is there a difference between product personalization & customization?

Brands often use the terms ‘personalization’ and ‘customization’ interchangeably, but they’re two separate features that offer different benefits in the overall customer experience. Customization transforms customers into creators, letting them build and interact with their own version of the products. For example, selecting colors/text to create a one-of-a-kind sneaker. Personalization, on the other hand, is how retailers tailor product offerings for each consumer by leveraging data from past purchases to provide a unique shopping experience. Anytime you see a “recommended for you” section on a website is personalization in action.

Why is creating a visual shopping experience so important?

What is the first thing you do when you walk into a brick-and-mortar store? Look around and interact with the products. Humans are oriented by sight. In fact, the human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text. Since other senses like touch, smell, etc. are absent to the online shopper, visualization is extremely important for eCommerce. Providing opportunities for consumers to engage with products through 3D and AR translates into a much higher conversion rate and increased customer satisfaction, while reducing returns, carbon emissions, automating processes, and increasing productivity.

2D, 3D and AR — what’s the difference between them?

2D are the flat product images you see clicking through any desktop or mobile website. These standard images are universal but can lack the interactive aspect consumers need to make a purchasing decision. 3D allows you to realistically view the complete product as a 360-degree digital model, which can be moved, rotated, and zoomed in/out. This allows a customer to properly see the full product, including its sizing, texture, colors, etc. AR applications give the consumer the ability to place virtual objects within real-world environments, such as previewing a couch in your home from all angles.

Why should retailers embrace technologies like 3D and AR? What are the benefits?

During a recent Zakeke survey, a respondent said if they’re going to buy something online,
they’ll go into the physical store to try it on/interact with it then go home to purchase it online. This should be a wakeup call. No matter what they’re in the market to purchase, consumers are more apt to buy something when they can visually see what it will look like on themselves or in a space. Investing in technology like 3D and AR opens a whole new realm of shopping online and allows consumers to have an engaging, visual shopping experience as if they were in a brick-and-mortar store. This leads to increased conversion rates, which leads to increased revenue, but most importantly, increased consumer confidence in their purchases, meaning fewer returns and the opportunity to build brand loyalty.
